Blazing Saddles

Classic Mel Brooks. Though slightly dated, a lot of it is timeless ("Son, you're on your own!").

Schindler's List

A masterpiece about a German-Nazi businessman, Oscar Schindler, who hires and buys Jews to work at his factory to save them from massacre. Long, but full of heart-pulling, shocking documentation of Krakov and Nazi-Poland.

The Untouchables

"You carry a badge? you carry a gun!".... "Just like a wop to bring a knife to gun fight."
The pram tumbles in slow motion down the stairs... Kevin Costner takes out one, two, three thugs... almost gets shot... Garcia rescues, Costner gives in to his soft self and runs to save the baby... grabs it just in time with Garcia levelling it underneath, then he shoots between the eyes....
Classic all round!
Super cast, super show, just a lil' OTT on the hero musical soundtrack. Before its time.

Blade Runner

Why are all 70s and 80s movies about the future set in dark, stormy worlds? Great futuristic sets and ideas - Harrison Ford is a blade runner, a policeman who "retires" escaped "replicants" (artificial humans). After 6 escape, he ends up timidly hunting down the remaining 4 and on the way falls in love with another experimental replicant (with the 80s signature big-hair, shoulder pads and simple love story). Violent and thrilling with an attempt at tackling the issue of machines and emotions. Music by Vangelis.

Ghostbusters

From the outset this film does not fail to entertain. With a fantastic combination of great effects, wierd gadgets and dry humour brilliantly delivered by Bill Murray this film is exciting and funny from start to finish. A great supporting cast (Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver) and the unforgettable giant 'Marshmallow Man' destructor monster help to create both laughs and suspense. It is all packaged neatly with the very catchy theme by Ray Parker Jr "Who ya gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS!"

The Thin Man

A real comedy drama.
Wynant, an old famous inventor, disppears and inspector Nick Charles reluctantly takes on the case with his wife (and Astor the dog)... The relationship between suave Nick and witty Nora (William Powell & Myrna Loy) delivers smart one-liners ("Waiter serve the nuts... I mean serve the guests the nuts"), entertaining action and murder mystery. The dinner denoument is filled with suspense and humour... Can't wait to see the sequels.

The Sting

Dynamic duo Redford and Newman play off each other in a storyline full of bluff and surprises, reminescent of Ocean's 11. Light-hearted and full of twists, these con-men con everyone in the depression and the audience. Depression, poker, horse-races, cops... all to Scott Joplin.

The Color Purple

For a film about one colour this film is very colourful. Whoopi and Oprah have amazing performances. An incredibly moving story about losing a child and coping under the dominance of others - Celie goes through so much before she finally builds up strength to defy her husband / master (Danny Glover) and eventually meets her sister and son again.

Kramer vs Kramer

From start to finish this is a visually simple and beautiful film with complex characters and a touching story. Hoffman plays such a human father struggling to bring up their only son and pick up the pieces after his wife (Meryl Streep) walks out, then re-appears and demands custody.

Project A Part 2

this is a classic 80s Jackie Chan film where baddies multiply and multiply, there's a great deal of humourous action and the whole thing is as if it's on speed. There's and extremely entertaining part when Jackie and another cop are handcuffed together and are chased by pirates and other baddies.... In the end Jackie gets beaten up a billion times by lots of different enemies but still manages to save the day from corrupt police officials and evil mainlanders.
